French retail giants Auchan and Leroy Merlin have embarked on a major sustainability initiative, installing over 27,000 photovoltaic panels on 28 of their stores across Romania. These installations now cover approximately 20 percent of each store’s energy needs, collectively producing more than 14,000 MWh of energy annually.

The project includes 16 Auchan hypermarkets and 12 Leroy Merlin locations, with solar panels installed across a total area exceeding 63,000 square meters. On average, each store features around 1,000 panels with an output of 400 W per panel, reducing their reliance on conventional energy sources by up to 30 percent.

This move follows Auchan’s decision late last year to begin generating renewable energy at 16 of its Romanian hypermarkets as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.
