The Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA) has awarded Goldbeck, a leading construction and services company, its largest contract to date: the planning and construction of ten operational training centers for the General Customs Directorate. This ambitious project is set to enhance training facilities for customs officers across Germany, with a strong focus on both ecological and economic sustainability.

Goldbeck will be responsible for building the new training centers in ten locations: Garching, Kümmersbruck, Eppingen, Beckum, Heiligenhaus, Walsrode, Griesheim, Stahnsdorf, Chemnitz, and Neumünster. Each site will feature a sports hall, an operations training building, and an indoor shooting range, all spread across a 13,500-square-meter area. Construction start dates will vary by location, with the completion of all buildings expected by the end of 2027.

The project leverages Goldbeck’s serial planning and construction method, allowing for identical buildings across all locations. This method ensures that the centers are consistently sustainable, economical, and of high quality. Holger Hentschel, a member of the BImA Executive Board, emphasized the importance of providing excellent training standards for customs officers, highlighting Goldbeck as an innovative partner capable of delivering state-of-the-art facilities nationwide.

Goldbeck’s systematized construction approach allows for the prefabrication of key elements in its factories, which are then assembled on-site. This high level of standardization and prefabrication makes it possible to efficiently construct multiple buildings across different locations. “Together, we are launching a flagship project with nationwide appeal,” said Jan-Hendrik Goldbeck, Managing Partner of Goldbeck. “The logic is economical and efficient: plan once, build ten times. With our systematized construction method, we can quickly realize high-quality buildings for customs.”

Goldbeck won the contract through an EU-wide tendering process, which encouraged bidders to propose innovative solutions for the serial construction project. After a thorough evaluation, Goldbeck was chosen for its exceptional planning and construction capabilities, as well as its cost-effective proposal.

In addition to quality and efficiency, the project places a strong emphasis on sustainability, climate protection, and reducing CO2 emissions. The buildings will meet the EGB 40 standard and be certified under the Sustainable Building Assessment System (BNB). A holistic photovoltaic system will allow the buildings to operate almost self-sufficiently, with electricity generated by both rooftop and façade-mounted solar panels. Solar carports will provide shaded parking while also producing renewable energy. The project will also include 825 charging points for electric vehicles across the ten sites.

The buildings’ roofs will not only generate electricity but also support rainwater seepage and cooling through green coverage. Façade plants will enhance these effects. Goldbeck will use a timber hybrid construction method, combining the strengths of timber, concrete, and steel, while avoiding the need for basements to minimize soil disruption. This approach benefits biodiversity by preserving open spaces and creating new habitats for plants and animals. “People and nature belong together,” said Jörg-Uwe Goldbeck, Managing Partner of Goldbeck. “With our innovative construction methods, we create spaces worth living in and reduce the carbon footprint.”

Goldbeck will provide comprehensive services for the BImA, including a +5 customer service program to support building utilization during the first five years after completion.
