Janczyk: It is difficult to imagine euro adoption in the near future

It is difficult to imagine the adoption of the euro by Poland in the near future, but the mere fulfillment of the conditions for adopting the single currency may take place in the next six years, says Wojciech Janczyk, candidate for a member of the Monetary Policy Council (MPC).

"I can imagine a situation where in the next few years - that is, perhaps within the [six-year] term of the MPC currently appointed - these criteria could be met. But personally, I believe that the benefits of having your own monetary policy cannot be denied," he said. Janczyk during a session of the Parliamentary Public Finance Committee.

"But it is difficult for me to imagine that Poland would soon enter the euro area - and this is for one reason: having its own central bank and its own monetary policy gives some opportunities to assess our work and competitiveness within the EU, within the framework that allows generating good conditions for exports, he added.

The candidacy of Janczyk - and Elżbieta Ostrowska - for MPC members on behalf of the Sejm was on the agenda of the Chamber's meeting on January 26-27.

February 9 this year the six-year term of office of 2 MPC members appointed by the Seym ends - Grażyna Ancyparowicz and Eryk Łona. March 30 this year. the term of office of the third MPC member appointed by the Chamber ends - Jerzy Żyżyński.

Earlier in January, the Senate appointed Ludwik Kotecki and Przemysław Litwiniuk as its representatives to the MPC.
