Niedzielski: We expect over 50,000 infections daily this week

The Ministry of Health expects over 50,000 of new and confirmed cases of coronavirus infection daily this week, up to 100,000 people may go into quarantine people a day, said the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski. He also did not rule out that the decision to switch to distance learning would be made "from day to day" before the end of the winter break.

"Unfortunately, the scenarios that we can see are being implemented mean that this week we will definitely have exceeded 50,000 infections. We see a very dynamic increase in orders for tests. [...] This number of orders is increasing every day," said Niedzielski during a press conference in Poznań.

He noted that so far no increase in the number of hospitalizations has been observed, but talks are underway with voivodes on the preparation of hospital beds for potential patients.

When asked about the number of people who may be quarantined, he said that the ministry assumes that there are 1 to 2 people sent to quarantine per one infected person.

"If we assume more or less - I am talking about the scale of this week - 50 thousand infections, then more or less for one isolation we have an average [...] between 1 and 2 additional quarantines. So it may turn out that we will have 100 thousand quarantines each. per day," he stressed.

He did not rule out the introduction of distance learning for schools and announced that in the event of a sharp increase in the number of infections, a decision in this matter could be made "overnight".

"Over the weekend, I consulted the minister [of education and science Przemysław] Czarnek and indeed, we can see the dynamics of the situation. we observe the number of outbreaks and their number in schools, which is growing very dynamically - perhaps we will make such a decision overnight," said Niedzielski.

He also informed that drugs for COVID-19, recommended in the early stages of the disease, today or tomorrow, will be forwarded by the Government Strategic Reserves Agency to family doctors.

The Ministry of Health yesterday announced 29,100 new cases of coronavirus infection.
