Prague 3 to launch architectural competition for new apartment buildings near Žižkov freight station
Prague 3 is set to launch an architectural competition for the design of new apartment buildings near the Žižkov freight station. District councillors recently approved an application to the Ministry of Regional Development (MMR) for a grant under the National Renewal Master Plan, aimed at funding the competition and subsequent project documentation.
The proposed buildings will be located in the southern part of the area bordered by Na Viktorce and U Staré Cihelny streets. The cost of organizing the competition and creating the design is estimated at CZK 12.1 million, with CZK 10 million expected to come from the subsidy. Although previously approved, the project was delayed due to funding issues.
The plan is to build the apartment blocks in stages to secure funding for each phase through various subsidy programs. According to the terms of the grant, the project must be completed by June 2026, with the houses to be built within the following ten years.
Prague has faced a housing crisis in recent years due to skyrocketing real estate prices. The city’s current public housing stock has dwindled to around 30,000 units, down from 194,000 in 1991 due to privatizations. City officials aim to increase the number of public housing units to offer more affordable homes, particularly for essential workers.
